Avocado Brigadeiros (Brigadeiro de Abacate)

Rich and sweet with a hint of lime, my Avocado Brigadeiros are super simple to make and definitely a crowd pleaser! The famous Brazilian chocolate bonbons called Brigadeiros were the sweets that inspired me to make this avocado version. Guess what else served as an inspiration for me? The Incredible Hulk – yes, he did! I know there is nothing sweet about Hulk’s personality, but my son really wanted a superhero party for his 4th birthday this year, so I created several different kinds of flavored Brigadeiros to go with the party theme. Of course that somehow the Incredible Hulk Brigadeiro would HAVE to be green! That’s how my delicious Avocado Brigadeiro was born! Kids and adults loved it, and my husband even said it was his favorite out all the other flavors I made!! Now, if you look at the picture above, you can definitely notice that its looks are classy enough to go with any party, and not necessary with just a crazy kid's party. So make it for your next event, but be sure to eat in no longer than 48 hours after the preparation time. Enjoy!

Yields about 50 balls

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for rolling
  • 2 cans sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 Hass avocado, or half of a California avocado, pitted and peeled
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 cup sand sugar, for rolling (see Cook’s Notes)

Directions:

Melt the butter in medium sauce pan set over moderate heat. Add sweetened condensed milk and stir, constantly, until mixture has thicken and bubbles start to form; 10 to 12 minutes. Do not allow the mixture to stick to the bottom of the pan; so stir constantly and lower the heat to medium-low during the process, if necessary. Once thicken, immediately transfer dough to a medium bowl.

Add avocado and lime juice to a processor or blender. Process until smooth. Add ½ cup to 1 cup of dough to food processor and pulse 3 to 4 times. Fold avocado mixture into the bowl and stir until combined. Cover and transfer to refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours, until mixture is chilled.

In a working surface, place sand sugar in a small bowl. Butter the palm of your hands. Take small amounts of dough (approximately 1 ½ teaspoon) and roll forming a ball. Roll it over sand sugar. Repeat the process for the remaining dough. If desired, place ball into small candy cups. Refrigerate until serving. Serve cold.

Cook’s Notes:

The Avocado Brigadeiros last about 48 hours in the refrigerator.

Use your preferred color of sand sugar; but for this specific recipe, I like to use white sand sugar so the green dough can be seen. It is kind of fun!
